Simple steps keep businesses safe and sound, says Impact Handling

$

Safety is essential for any business to run efficiently and profitably, but in few places is this more important than in warehouses. With forklifts, pallet trucks and tow tractors working alongside other machines and people, a busy warehouse has the potential to be an accident hot-spot if not managed properly. Impact Handling’s Contracts Manager, Geoff Newbery, shares his simple steps for keeping your business and your staff safe.

Keep training fresh

It is essential for all employees to have basic health and safety training and be fully aware of what to do in an emergency. Keep staff training up-to-date and hold frequent refresher courses. It is also vital that any machinery operators, whether they’re driving a forklift or operating a pallet stacker are fully trained on the machine they are using – taking the time to implement training for operators on a new piece of kit is a great way to limit unnecessary accidents.

Right truck, right track

Picking a truck that has optimum safety features is a smart way to keep your staff on the right track. Cat® Lift Trucks’ electric forklifts have a unique auto park brake, which means as soon as the driver leaves the machine the brakes come on. All Cat® lift trucks also feature operator presence systems, so unless a driver is sitting on the seat correctly the truck will not operate. The system also alerts the driver when the handbrake has been left on or it’s left in gear.

Survey the site

At Impact Handling we not only manage our own warehouses but we frequently attend customers’ sites to survey the environment their trucks will be working in, ensuring they have the right machine for the job. If a customer has particularly narrow aisles they will need a narrow truck to fit into their operation. By completing a complimentary full site audit we’re able to assess which trucks are best suited not only for the job but the site too.

Image-for-WLN-0314Inside and outside matters

It’s common sense to know keeping floors clear of rubbish and excess wrapping is an easy way to avoid accidents, but it’s these small errors that can often cause problems. Making sure yard spaces are safe is as important as keeping the inside of a warehouse in top condition. Uncovered drains and kerbs can contribute to unwanted accidents, so it is essential to erect barriers and have designated areas for workers to operate in.

Reversing warnings

As warehouses are noisy environments, fitting reverse warning sirens via the direction switch, is a simple way to alert people a machine is moving backwards and avoid unwanted bumps. A flashing beacon can also be added to a machine, further alerting fellow workers to the fact that it is reversing.

Leading materials handling solutions provider, Briggs Equipment helped an Essex-based company to spread a little extra festive cheer last Christmas by supplying a unique piece of warehouse equipment able to service double deep racking and lift over half-tonne loads to a maximum height of 12.5m.

53257PMS International is one of the UK’s largest importers of novelty gifts, toys and Christmas decorations and it took delivery of a new Hyster VNA C1.5L with an extended fork attachment – the first of its type in the UK – ahead of the seasonal rush.

Briggs Equipment Area Account Manager, Mark Gregory, explained: “We’ve worked with PMS International for many years and when they needed to replace their very narrow aisle equipment we proved to be the only company that could meet their requirements.

At its 385,000 sq m warehouse in Basildon, PMS holds more than half a million cartons of goods at peak times such as the run up to Christmas. A relatively small proportion of the goods are palletised and a section of the warehouse is dedicated to pallet storage.

“The warehouse is also two storeys high and the pallets are stored on the ground floor which has racking to a height of 12.5m,” Mark continued. “As a result, space is at a premium and the company required a VNA truck capable of double stacking,”

To further improve productivity at the facility, the new Hyster truck has been fitted with a state-of-the art asset management system. In addition to providing real-time data for reporting, fleet utilisation and control, Briggs Equipment’s exclusive Speedshield telemetry system also ensures operator access is controlled whilst providing full health and safety audits and compliance reporting.

Clive Acklam, Warehouse Manager – PMS International commented: “throughout the relationship we have found Briggs Equipment to be very professional, delivering a tailored solution that meets the demands of our business.

“We were particularly impressed with the efforts made by the Briggs Equipment team during the installation of the new equipment to make the warehouse operation as safe and efficient as possible. Going forward, we know we can rely on excellent service support.”

The Hyster VNA truck will operate alongside PMS International’s existing fleet, which also includes a Hyster 4 wheel counter balance and an articulated fork truck.

New mast design delivers visible productivity improvements

$

A series of product upgrades on Yale counterbalance lift trucks have been introduced offering exceptional operator visibility, promoting higher productivity and reduced maintenance contributing to lower cost of ownership.

C166---ISSFP---Warehouse_and_Fork_Lift

Two new mast designs, and a redesigned integral side-shifting fork positioner carriage, offer businesses a number of benefits which contribute to increased productivity, reduced operator fatigue and lower product and equipment damage.

Enhanced Mast visibility and lengthened service life

Yale has redesigned its 3-stage FFL and 2-stage LFL masts to  optimise operator visibility and extend service life. The new designs include new chain placement and hose routings to maximise the forward window through which the operator can see the forks as well as the 180 degree panoramic field of vision.

Changes to the design also contribute to increased mast rigidity and hydraulic hose life, extending service intervals and reducing maintenance and repairs over the product’s lifetime.

Manufactured without compromise Yale masts continue to provide robust and reliable performance, resulting in lower operating costs.

Productivity increased

NMHG counterbalance product strategy manager, Mat Allen comments: “The exceptional operator visibility made possible by the new mast design will lead to increased productivity and driver comfort. The optimised visibility also contributes to reducing product and equipment damage.

Mast lowering speeds have also been increased, in product testing two additional full capacity loads were handled every hour. Over the year, this could equate to more than 3500 loads, a figure that could on its own make a dramatic impact on any operation’s productivity levels.”

New side shifting fork positioner

The new Yale side shifting fork positioner has been designed for Yale counterbalance forklift trucks including the ERP13-15 VC, ERP15-20VT, ERP16-20VF, ERC16-20VA electric series and GDP/GLP16-20VX ICE series.

The fork spread can be adjusted from a minimum inside dimension of 50mm, allowing specialist tools to be engaged, through the normal load handling requirements, up to a maximum outside edge width of 852mm, providing maximum support for wider loads.

Explaining the benefits Mat Allen, NMHG counterbalance product strategy manager, said: “Essentially the main advantage of the Yale side shifting fork positioner is that it allows the fork spacing to be adjusted from the operator’s compartment eliminating the need for the operator to manually adjust the forks for different loads. In many mixed load applications this could be as many as 50 – 60 times a day. By reducing one of the operator’s physical operations we are helping to reduce fatigue. The truck’s hydraulics take the strain instead of the operator.

“In addition, as the mast capacity of the truck is not affected by the use of the integral side shift fork positioner the full capacity load can be handled. This results in an increased capacity of 60kg more per load when compared to the hang on type of attachment. In an intense application this could equate to handling 3.6 tonnes more per hour. Based on moving 60 loads an hour this could equate to 21.6 tonnes per shift; or 108 tonnes a week!

“The ergonomic and productivity benefits can be clearly seen. What’s more, the ability to control the fork spread from the driver’s seat also offers substantial time savings in mixed load applications where the operator would normally be manually adjusting the forks for different loads, often several times per shift. This could amount to as much as two and a half hours a week of an operator’s time.”

Toyota Material Handling UK meets customer demand by investing £7 million into their short-term hire fleet, with a further investment of 500 trucks planned for 2014.

LineUp-CB-DSC_0167Toyota has increased the size of its short-term hire fleet to over 3,500 trucks to help customers who need an emergency replacement, unexpected demand, but also to support seasonal peaks.

The investment in their short-term hire fleet has significantly reduced the age of trucks available and has enabled Toyota to provide customers with greater choice and availability of the latest models.

Additional trucks added to the fleet include over 120 Toyota Tonero engine-powered counterbalance forklifts and 180 Toyota Traigo electric-powered forklifts, including over 20 Toyota Traigo 80-volt forklifts launched in the UK last May.

Rachel Thomas, Rental Operations Manager for Toyota Material Handling UK said “By understanding our customers’ requirements, we have increased our fleet in the areas where we have the most demand. We want to provide our customers with highest quality trucks and that is why nearly 40% of the whole fleet and 62% of the counterbalance fleet is less than 3 years old. We are also looking at how we can support specialised industries by ordering industry tailored trucks. An example of this is within the local farming industry where we have a dedicated fleet of farming spec Toyota Tonero forklifts, allowing us to provide delivery within 24 hours”.

The short-term hire fleet will be managed by Toyota’s dedicated short-term customer service hire team.

Thomas adds “We have also developed our customer service team, who are responsible for scheduling and managing the Toyota short-term hire fleet. Through their shared experiences and understanding of the Toyota Way values they have developed better ways of working, implemented a Kaizen continuous improvement board to keep performance and changes visible, and as a result have been able to improve efficiency and provide great service to our customers.”

Toyota believes that by investing in their short term hire fleet all customers will be able to locate the truck they need, when they need it.

Bulmor’s reputation extends at Ridgeons

$

Since humble beginning in a backroom in Cambridge in 1911, Ridgeon’s has grown steadily to become one of the UK’s largest independent Timber and Builders Merchants with 25 locations across the East of England.

Bulmor---Ridgeons-Inset-Image

A tangible sign of the company’s progress was the opening, in the 80s, of a magnificent new warehouse on a 12 acre site in Suffolk, with capacity for 600 full packs of timber or 2500m² of finished stock which complements the two mills and treatment plants there. A notable feature of the new facility is some 640 linear metres of adjustable cantilever racking which serves as the structural support for the building and gives much better storage at 6m high rather than the usual 5.4m – and this is where Bulmor Lancer’s special sideloaders literally fit in. Ridgeon’s General Manager Jem Slee sets the scene “We have seen a very satisfactory growth in our business and we needed extra covered space to store both sawn joinery material and finished products. So as to maximise the benefit of the extra height we replaced the two existing sideloaders with two new economic diesel – powered Bulmor Lancer sideloaders with a 6m reach. The new advanced machines are also notably fitted with three built-in cameras positioned to cover the back, the offside area and the fork carriage. We chose Bulmor Lancer because of the superior specification and their willingness to work with us to get the correct specification and the quality of the machines as well as being realistically competitive. Our plan is to eventually change the existing fleet of sideloaders to the high-reach version”.

All of which reflects the fact that over the last 100 years the Ridgeons client base has grown to include sectors as diverse as property development, the public sector, farming, exports and DIY. However, the appeal of the service quality remains the same with a commitment to an outstanding width and depth of stock available for collection or delivery. A range extending from the external envelope – including bricks and engineering timber solutions, through to kitchens and bathrooms, plumbing and heating, paints and fixings to meet all project needs across the region. And for the record there are many other generic health & safety features of the Bulmor Lancer range commencing with a unique drive pedal inhibitor and warning buzzer if foot pressure fails; large profile wheels for easier travel on uneven ground with better directional stability compared to other truck types and less stress on the operator and load; wide comfortable cabins with adjustable seats and tinted safety glass; armoured roofs plus protective grills and flexible steering incorporating operating functions and pre-controlled hydraulics with simple joystick steering. The LQ50 model at Ridgeons also offers lifting capacity of 5 tons and platform width of 1200mm.

Fourth Combilift for Cranwood Industries

$

0

One of Ireland’s leading suppliers of timber and timber-based products, Cranwood Industries, has just added a fourth Combilift 4-way forklift to its fleet, having acquired its first – which is still going strong – in 2002. Since the company was established over 20 years ago it has been involved in some of the most prestigious construction projects in Ireland and as part of the Murdock Builders’ Merchants Group it also supplies its nine depots across the country.

Cranwood-6

Cranwood’s sawmill at Warrenpoint in County Down has recently been upgraded to a purpose built 3 acre factory to meet consumer demand for its highly specialised custom moulded products in both hardwood and softwood. Due to the wide variety and varying dimensions of stock, a versatile approach to materials handling is crucial to ensure quick and easy offloading, transport and despatch of the 2,500m³ of timber and sheet materials that are housed in the mill.

The current total of three 4 tonne capacity C4000 models and one 4-way sideloader, all diesel powered, have replaced 2-directional sideloaders. Their multidirectional capability has been of considerable benefit as Operations Manager Paul Smyth explains: “the manoeuvrability of the trucks was a real attraction – it allows them to nip in and out of aisles and around obstacles making procedures quicker all round and the drivers also appreciate the improved visibility from the cab.”

The C4000’s are used mainly for loading, offloading and in the despatch area where they handle lengths of up to around 6m. They service a small section of racking as well as a storage area where bales are block stacked four high and two wide. Their 4-way ability comes into its own again here, allowing them to access the spaces between bales to pick wherever and whatever is needed, which was impossible with the previous trucks given their limited manoeuvrability. The higher 5t lift capacity of the SL model is ideal for handling heavier duty packs of hardwood and sheet materials which tend to be wider and bulkier than the timber products.

“We work our forklifts hard here,” says Paul. “They are on the go constantly from 7am to 5.30pm, and it is testament to the quality of the machines that our first Combilift, with over 11 years of service, is still as good as the newer ones when it comes to performance and reliability.”

Leading forklift firm provide safe skip solution

$

A leading forklift attachment firm has supplied a fitting solution to one of its clients for the safe and speedy removal of scrap materials.

Tipping-SkipMid Wales-based Contact Attachments has provided MKM Building Supplies Ltd, the UK’s largest independent builders merchant, with one of its tipping skips to offer staff a safe and convenient way to dispose of waste products.

The tipping skips are developed from either regular or heavy duty steel, which ensures a longer service life, and are fitted with bolted on castors to eliminate the need for welding should they need replacing, as well as security chains for ensuring the lift is securely fastened to the truck. With capacity ranging from 0.25m3 right up to 2.0m3, the tipping skips are full width to prevent customers having to dangerously lean between the skip and truck mast.

Tommy Stevenson, Assistant Manager at MKM Building Supplies, explained: “After opening our first branch in Glasgow, and arranging the stock range, we were left with a significant amount of waste packaging. Prior to purchasing the skip, our staff were using dustbins mounted on pallets, which was certainly not an option we could use going forward, and also posed a huge problem when it came to manually tipping the waste into the high-sided skip. Contact Attachments were recommended to us, and we found the team’s advice to be spot-on. Within a week of ordering we received the skip, which is now a valuable piece of kit that we now use on a daily basis.”

Jason Cadman, Technical Sales Consultant at Contact Attachments, commented: “We are delighted that one of our products has helped improve efficiency and safety at MKM’s brand new outlet in Glasgow. As a firm, we are committed to the safety of our customers, which is why we have designed a skip that ensures tasks can be carried out automatically, rather than manually. The auto release skip, for example, includes a nudge bar which enables the driver to empty the contents of the skip without leaving the cab, ensuring optimum safety for the employee, and a speedier waste disposal process.”

Contact Attachments has been designing and manufacturing forklift truck attachments from its base in Newtown, Mid Wales, for over 30 years and is recognised as the quality leader of truck attachments in the UK.

Palletways achieves the “perfect” forklift deal market leader’s switch to Mitsubishi boosts performance and cuts costs

$
0
0

Europe’s leading pallet network, Palletways, has described its groundbreaking switch to Mitsubishi forklift trucks as “perfect”.

Mit-5797

Last year, the firm took the major decision to break with the longstanding forklift supplier at its massive Lichfield depot, and instead sourced 60 GRENDIA LPG trucks and associated equipment from Jofson Mitsubishi.

A year on, the new Mitsubishi trucks have proven so successful the switch could be copied at other sites across the continent.

“After 14 years, it was a major decision to break away from our previous supplier,” explains Palletways general manager Dave Daniels. “Understandably, we were worried. But it was perfect. We couldn’t be happier.”

Performance and economy compared

The Mitsubishi GRENDIA model was selected following extensive testing and comparison of fuel economy and short-shuttle performance against major competitors. An experienced Palletways forklift operator visited Jofson to finalise the trucks’ specification, with fingertip hydraulic controls and individual driver ID.

Meanwhile, John Wright of Jofson created a bespoke service agreement to ensure the trucks would always deliver for Palletways’ intensive, round-the-clock operation.

Mit-5748

Even with such in-depth preparation and support, however, Palletways prepared for teething troubles that are common with major contracts. None arrived.

Dave Daniels recalls: “The transition to Mitsubishi was actually far smoother than we had expected.

“I liked John Wright immediately. He’s a straight-talking, professional guy and gave us no false promises: everything Jofson said, they’ve delivered. I can’t praise them highly enough.”

27,000 pallet movements per night

The GRENDIA forklifts’ natural toughness came into its own over Christmas, standing up to a season Daniels describes as “Hell-for-leather”, when Palletways set new records for pallet movements in a single night.

Unlike many trucks, which are built around a flimsy, belt-driven automotive engine, the Mitsubishi LPG forklift engine is truly industrial; its drive chain reducing servicing costs and dramatically cutting downtime: ideal for Palletways’ punishing schedule.

Dave Daniels explains: “We really put the trucks through their paces. Last night was fairly typical: we made 27,000 pallet movements. It’s incredibly hard work, 24 hours a day, six and a half days a week. I always say one year here is like five anywhere else, so a tough truck and great support are essential.”

Meanwhile, Palletways’ seasonal capacity fluctuations and unexpected peaks in demand are speedily accommodated by a designated account manager at Jofson, Andy Homer.

He says: “Palletways work against the clock, so forklift availability and uptime are critical: the trailers arrive, and the pallets absolutely have to be moved. No ifs, no buts, and no second chances.

“That’s why we manage the performance very carefully, and structured the contract to include the flexibility Palletways need to get the job done, every single night.”

No compromise on productivity

The new trucks’ customisable performance enables Palletways to fine-tune maximum travel speeds & acceleration parameters. Combined with clean burning, fuel-injected engine technology and three-way catalytic converter, the result is a startling reduction in fuel costs, with no loss of productivity, and vastly reduced emissions for warehouse use.

It is a combination that is already drawing admiring glances from Palletways depots further afield.

Dave Daniels concludes: “We’re awaiting the exact figures from the full year’s operating cycle, but it’s already clear the new trucks are significantly more cost effective.

“As our other European sites reach the end of their forklift contracts, we’ll look favourably on Mitsubishi, I’m sure.”

Safe, fast & precise even at large lift heights!

Outstanding cost-effectiveness, the highest quality with advanced technology and ergonomics are the attributes of STILL’s completely redesigned FM-X model series with load capacities of 1.0t to 2.5t. Due to the active load stabilisation of the mast, a residual load-bearing capacity of 1000kg at a lift height of 13 metres, high driving and lifting speeds combined with longer battery operating time (thanks to energy-saving LED headlights) and energy recovery during braking, enable the FM-X to give optimum performance in any warehouse. With its compact dimensions, the reach truck is the right choice both in a block warehouse and in a shelf aisle, for goods provision and disposal or for transport over long distances, including combined indoor and outdoor use.

Picture-7_FM-X---Curve-Speed-Control---for-greater-safety-when-driving-round-bends

Mast vibrations, especially at large lift heights and working speeds are a time-consuming nuisance for forklift drivers and operators because it is impossible to pick up or put down any loads until the mast has stopped swinging. This reduces the user’s possible productivity. Christian Baerwolff – Head of Product Management at STILL, says “With the active load stabilisation on the new FM-X, waiting times can be reduced by up to 80%, because an automatic balancing pulse quickly and effectively stops the vibrations that occur at large heights.” This enables the innovative module to handle loads on the shelf efficiently but safely at the same time. While other reach trucks are still waiting for the mast vibrations to subside, the FM-X can already handle the next goods transport. At medium lift heights and while driving, the OPTISPEED driver assistance system automatically adapts the truck’s movements to the weight of the load being transported, thus also enabling faster goods handling at floor level. Moreover, the use of the very latest proportional valve technology also ensures sensitive operation and continuously variable control.

Thanks to the improved stiffness of the lifting mechanism and the newly developed mast, the FM-X now has no problems lifting loads of up to 1000kg to a maximum lift height of 13m, thus giving the operator optimum utilisation of his storage space. The model range has a total of six different load capacity classes – from 1.0t to 2.5t. All the trucks except the 2.5t model are also available in a narrow version for use in a block-type warehouse or drive-in rack. In addition the FM-X in the 1.4t, 1.7t and 2.0t versions is also available with super-elastic tyres and more ground clearance for combined indoor and outdoor use.

The 48V 3-phase drive enables powerful acceleration combined with high driving speeds of up to 14km/h and lifting speeds of up to 0.5m/s. All the drives for the propulsion, lifting and steering functions are fully encapsulated and thus have optimum protection against environmental effects such as dust, dirt and moisture. To allow every truck to have optimum equipment for the respective use, STILL offers a selection of different battery capacities from 360 to 930Ah. As a result of the energy recovery and storage during braking, energy saving LED headlights and the opportunity through the Blue-Q efficiency mode (to gain an energy saving of up to 10% at the push of a button without sacrificing performance) and multi-shift deployments are also possible with a single battery charge. However, STILL also demonstrates environmental responsibility and the conservation of resources by the almost complete recyclability of all the materials used.

STILL has improved the quick, safe entry and exit from the truck by providing an enlarged low step and wide handrail. An integrated ergonomic concept with a roomy driving position, adjustable controls and generous leg room ensure relaxed, comfortable and safe working during the whole shift. For example the steering wheel height is now also adjustable. A cushioned driving seat considerably reduces shocks due to uneven floors/ground, thus protecting the driver’s back. Use of the proportional seat and footplate adjustment also allows the seat to be adapted individually to the ergonomic and optimum position for different drivers. The ergonomically inclined seat enables the driver to see upwards or past the goods in a way that is kind to the neck and thus relaxing. At the same time he/she can use the ergonomically designed joystick to carry out all the hydraulic functions easily and efficiently without needing to change his/her grip. A display gives a simple overview of comprehensive information about readiness for operation, speed, driving programs, battery discharge state or even the weight being lifted. STILL’s standardised operating concept and intuitive user guidance reduces driver training costs and simplifies their transfer to other STILL machines.

Picture-8_FM-X---Active-load-stabilisation-to-counteract-the-mast-vibrations-at-large-lift-heightsThe mast’s sideways movement function and the asymmetrically positioned free lift cylinders allow good visibility of the goods without any interfering hydraulic pipework on the fork carrier. The optional lift height pre-selection or use of a camera system on the forks give the driver additional help to position the forks accurately, thus simplifying goods placement and retrieval procedures. The fully electric 360° steering allows the FM-X to be positioned easily and sensitively, even with heavy loads of up to 2.5t. The constant “9 o’clock position” of the steering wheel when driving straight ahead assists safe straight line movement even at top speeds.

To make the FM-X even more robust to withstand tough everyday use, a sheet metal cladding protects the chassis in areas where there is a collision risk. The steering angle dependent speed regulation when cornering (Curve Speed Control) together with access control via data card, RFID chip or PIN are customisable according to individual needs which also ensures greater safety and security. This solution, which is offered in the form of STILL FleetManager 4.x also allows different user entitlements and speed limits thus enabling an in depth assessment and analysis to be carried out.

The new FM-X is designed to increase goods handling performance and to reduce the expenditure of time and cost. The success of this is confirmed by being honoured with the ‘Red Dot Award’ 2014. The jury praised the product design with its improved visibility and intuitive operation, together with its active load stabilisation to enable considerably faster storage placement and retrieval processes. They said that in conjunction with the reach truck’s large residual load capacities and smaller working aisle widths, the machine was perfectly suited to optimise the warehouse storage density.

Around 100 international journalists visited the Rhenus branch in Velten in the federal state of Brandenburg on Thursday, 27th March. The press representatives were given a presentation of the company and the range of services it offers in contract logistics at the location in the north of Berlin. During a guided tour through the warehouse halls, Rhenus employees presented the pharmaceuticals logistics, industrial goods logistics and printed matter & advertising logistics areas. A forklift demonstration rounded off the visit.

2014_03_27_Picture-4_Rhenus

Hans Tamaschke, Regional Manager East of Rhenus Contract Logistics, said “Our logistics product portfolio in contract logistics has expanded enormously in the past few years. That applies firstly to the depth of services we provide and secondly to the density of our network of branches. Our clients appreciate the logistics services we provide and the availability of large warehouse areas, especially in metropolitan regions. Our sites in Grossbeeren and not least in Velten as well are prime examples of this solution strategy in the Berlin district.”

During the guided tours through the modern halls of the Velten branch, Rhenus staff presented the warehousing concepts designed specifically for the respective industry sectors. Hans Tamaschke, who presented the site’s know-how to the visitors, explained that “For the pharmaceutical industry, for example, we have a dedicated refrigerated warehouse for medicines and active ingredients that must be stored in low temperature ranges. Our industrial goods clients benefit above all from our forklift technology with a large load-carrying capacity.”

2014_03_27_Picture-5_Rhenus

In addition to the theory, the practical aspects did not miss out either. For example the STILL Company, with whom Rhenus in Velten cooperates closely in the demand-based equipping of the branch with industrial trucks, presented its new FM-X reach truck. Summing it up, Hans Tamaschke said “We use these and other means of transport on our site to store and order-pick as efficiently as possible for our customers.”

Bloodhound reward for Linde’s star apprentices

The UK’s leading forklift truck manufacturer, Linde Material Handling, has launched an annual award to celebrate the success of its apprenticeship scheme, offering a reward with a difference for its star employees.

LindeIMHX13-(113)

Linde launched its apprentice scheme in 2011 after recognising that the shortage of skilled forklift truck engineers in the UK was becoming an issue for the industry. Three years later, the scheme is still proving successful. The company currently has a total of 43 apprentices across the UK and 16 new apprentices joined the business last year.

To recognise the apprentices’ hard work and the progression they have all made, Linde has introduced the ‘Apprentice of the Year Awards’ to name one individual each year who has particularly impressed their employer. And as a special reward, the company has arranged for the winner’s name to be printed on the SCC Bloodhound, the 1,000mph land speed car.

The Bloodhound SSC project represents an extreme sporting challenge – the development of a supersonic car, built in the UK by a team of Formula 1 and aerospace experts. The aim of the project is to inspire the younger generation about science, technology, engineering and mathematics by becoming the world land speed record holder as the car is designed to reach 1,000 mph and back to rest again in 120 seconds.

Linde Material Handling supports Bloodhound with forklift truck resource through Linde Forklift Truck Hire, and by adding Nathan Jones, Apprentice of 2012, and Kyle Sagar, Apprentice of 2013, onto the car’s fin, the company has demonstrated its continued support of the project.

Commenting on the introduction of the Apprentice of the Year scheme, Mark Sullivan, Head of Customer Service at Linde, said: “We are increasingly investing more time and money into recruiting and training apprentices and it is proving to be a successful venture for Linde. For the individuals, it’s a great opportunity to enter into a highly skilled and well paid career while all the time earning a wage as they learn, while for us as an employer, the apprentice scheme allows us to invest in our staff and ensure we have a highly skilled engineer workforce for the future.

“We are delighted to have been able to add Nathan and Kyle’s names to the fin of the Bloodhound as this is a great way to make them feel engaged in the project and give them a real boost in return for all their hard work and loyalty.”

Hyster has launched four powerful 16-18 tonne forklift trucks designed to save fuel in heavy steel, concrete and pipe handling operations.

h16_9xm-application-tubes[4]

“16-18 tonne loads tend to be bulky and often don’t fit on standard pallets,” explains Chris van de Werdt, Sales Manager Big Trucks, Northern Europe. “Attachments, live loads and extremely wide loads may be common at these capacities.”

For 16,000kg operations, the new Hyster® H16XM-12 provides full rated capacity at a 1,200mm load centre, while the H16XM-9 offers a 900mm load centre. Similarly, for heavier 18,000kg applications, Hyster has launched the new H18XM-7.5 and H18XM-9. All models offer the flexibility to extend the load centre and feature a short 3.75m wheelbase helping operations where space is limited.

These trucks have been developed using the latest technology from Hyster, resulting in up to 20% fuel savings for customers.

The engine complies with the latest Stage Tier 4i / Stage IIIB legislation without either a DEF (AdBlue) or a Diesel Particle Filter. Two operating modes are available; ECO-eLo mode optimises fuel efficiency by reducing the maximum engine speed and HiP High Performance Mode is the standard operating mode.

In addition to the Cummins engine technologies, Hyster has optimised performance with cooling on demand and load sensing hydraulics (power on demand).

“The hydraulic system is highly efficient delivering oil flow only when required.  This means it saves fuel, it runs quieter and helps extend the life of major components,” he says. “In fact, the oil and filters last longer, and hoses, seals and components wear less, prolonging their working life”.

The high-performance power train is also highly reliable, featuring engine and transmission protection, and the oil-immersed (wet) disc brakes help further support a total lower cost of operation.

“These lift trucks were developed, tested and refined to provide outstanding performance and reliability in pipe handling, general cargo, break bulk, lumber, steel, concrete and other heavy industries,” he says.

“They are stable forklifts when handling the heaviest loads thanks, in part, to the wide, heavy duty drive axle,” Chris explains. “We have also achieved less mast deflection than comparable products”.

There are multi-purpose, integral or hook-type, sideshift, fork positioning carriages with a range of different “quick disconnect” fork and front-end attachments (including coil rams). To reduce maintenance, wear pads are used instead of rollers to eliminate point loading.

The mast is rigid and tough, yet offers enhanced visibility for the operator, giving a clear view of the forks and load.

Load-sensing power steering provides low-effort operation and the smooth auto-shift transmission enhances operator comfort by virtually eliminating jerk and provides true inching capability.

“These machines are designed to be operated by drivers of all shapes and sizes,” he says, explaining that it is part of the latest generation of the Hyster Big Trucks featuring the Hyster “Vista” cab, which offers an outstanding range of standard ergonomic features, plus excellent all-round visibility, to ensure ease of operation.

“For the driver, there is easy access, convenient controls and a spacious cab providing a comfortable working environment in all weathers to increase and sustain productivity,” he says.

Noise levels are reduced on the outside and cabin interior noise is among the lowest in the industry, helping to enhance driver alertness and productivity.

“This truck is not only good for the operator, manager and financial controller, it is easier to service and has longer service intervals,” he adds.

All Hyster products are supported worldwide by a network of highly trained dealers providing expert, responsive local service.

Pioneering generation of battery charging systems

The Fronius stand at the upcoming CeMAT trade fair will be a visit not to be missed. The battery charging specialists will be showcasing their unique charging technology based on the innovative Ri charging process for the first time at a world-leading exhibition. This technology is not only resource-conserving and cost-effective, but also significantly prolongs battery life and delivers maximum energy efficiency. It is not witchcraft, just the result of intensive research that is not only of increasing interest to operators, but also forklift truck manufacturers.

The technical approach is just as straightforward as it is intelligent. What all battery charging technologies have in common – whether 50 Hz transformer technology, HF technology or earlier Fronius products that used “Active Inverter Technology” – is that their charging processes use pre prepared charging characteristics that are “imposed”, as it were, on the battery. This involves executing a defined charging program without having to take account of the current charge level of the battery. Currently, only Fronius chargers take the charge level of the battery into account during the recharging phase. This ensures that any overcharging of the battery is kept to an absolute minimum.

Fronius has opted for a completely alternative technical approach with its innovative Ri charging process. Once the charging plug is connected to the battery, the current charge level of the battery is permanently measured. This means that, regardless of how old or new the battery is, its temperature and discharge level are monitored. The charger software uses this information from the battery to adjust the individual charging phases – in other words the optimum power requirement of the battery – as required. Every single charging cycle is thus unique and has its own energy-efficient characteristic, minimising harmful warming of the battery. Thanks to this technology, the newly developed “Selectiva” devices with Ri charging process achieve charging efficiency levels that were previously inconceivable: a staggering 90 percent. Combining this with device efficiency, which Fronius has increased to 93 percent using economically viable means, results in a total efficiency figure of 84 percent.

Charging systems from a single source

Fronius has been involved in battery charging technology since 1946 and now also supplies traction battery charging systems and related products. When developing systems, Fronius therefore has years of expertise and experience from countless customer projects to draw on. Along with battery charging systems, products for kitting out charging stations and battery charging rooms will also be exhibited at CeMAT.

Fronius can supply battery charging systems with different modules as required. The standardised 2000 charging module can accommodate one or more Fronius battery charging systems, such as the new “Selectiva” devices with Ri charging process. Other high frequency battery charging systems can also be used. A smaller 1200 charging module has been designed exclusively for the Fronius Selectiva 8 kW and Selectiva 16 KW battery charging systems and can accommodate either one or two of these systems. The modules – fitted with mandatory warning notices – are designed to be very stable and are prepared for floor anchoring. Collision guards provide protection against impact damage by forklift trucks.

If required, Fronius can plan and implement charging systems in consultation with the customer, allowing them to be fully customised to the on-site requirements. During the design process, various module options relating to use, safety, premises, positioning and additional options are considered. As has already been demonstrated in practice, the new charging station approach will benefit forklift drivers in their day-to-day work, simplify the entire battery charging cycle and provide increased safety. The new layout will also help promote cleanliness and tidiness among employees and improve the allocation of charger to stacker.

Meeting your maintenance responsibilities – Peter Harvey MBE, Fork Lift Truck Association Chief Executive

$
0
0

Although it may be tempting to save a little time and money by cutting back on checks and maintenance, it is a false economy. As well as reducing the lifetime, efficiency and productivity of your truck, you will increase the chances of costly unplanned downtime and repairs. But most importantly, you will be putting people’s lives and health in danger.

Booklet-in-pouchIn March, courts heard how a vehicle salvage firm in Stalybridge was fined over multiple safety failings after a car weighing more than half a tonne fell from a fork lift truck, crushing a 22-year-old mechanic standing beneath it.

An investigation by the HSE found that the company had failed to carry out an annual service on the fork lift and it had numerous faults, including:

• Lifting chains in a dangerous condition (rust, stiff links and parts missing)

• Low level of hydraulic oil in the tank

• Badly damaged tyre

• Non-working handbrake and horn

• No seatbelt

What the law says

For safety reasons, proper maintenance is a legal requirement. Regulation 5 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98) specifies: “Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.”

Types of maintenance

There are two main aspects of maintenance:

• Scheduled servicing

• Daily or pre-shift checks

A related issue – and important consideration as it involves checking the truck’s condition – is Thorough Examination (visit www.thoroughexamination.org for more information). Importantly, Thorough Examination is not normally part of routine maintenance, so its requirements must be satisfied separately. Essentially, you must arrange for this to be carried out at the legally required intervals and obtain a Report of Thorough Examination. You should also clearly display the next examination date on the truck.

Regular servicing must be carried out by someone with the necessary training and experience to maintain a fork lift truck properly. It is much more complex than servicing a car.

The truck’s manufacturer will recommend intervals for inspections and services. These will vary according to the nature and intensity of your application. Your service provider can advise on what is needed and when. If a truck is being hired, you must allow your hire company to have access for maintenance as necessary.

Daily and pre-shift checks

These are your fork lift truck’s first line of defence. Your fork lift truck operators should go through these at the start of each shift or working day. The procedure should be a formal one, recorded in writing each time. Typically, it should take between five and ten minutes.

The truck manufacturer’s instructions, or your truck supplier, will explain exactly what needs to be checked. This will include all of the following, and more:

• Levels of essential fluids

• Warning lights

• Obvious faults

• Obvious leaks

• Damage to vital components

• Condition of tyres, wheels and wheel nuts

On completing the checks, the truck should not be used until:

• The operator has reported any resulting queries or concerns

• Advice has been obtained on any warning lights showing

• Any fault affecting safely has been rectified

Your responsibilities

Remember, it is your legal responsibility as a supervisor or manager to ensure that the maintenance programme is in place and daily checks are enforced. Make sure you know what those checks include.

A Daily Checks book, which simplifies recording of pre-shift checks, can be ordered from the Inspection Documents section of the online shop at www.fork-truck.org.uk. Free fact sheets on maintenance and other safety topics can be downloaded at www.fork-truck.org.uk/fact-sheets.
